Application Impacts How the impacts can be enhanced
A recent study shows that there is a strong correlation between inequality and types of crimes across local police jurisdictions in South Africa (24). The research showed that property crimes are most prevalent in wealthiest districts, while violent crimes occur in areas with high expenditure inequality in South Africa. It was indicated that crime prevention should account for distribution of wealth issues in a surrounding area vs. solely within borders of jurisdictions. There is a need to develop highly disaggregated data to more effectively analyse the relationship between crime and welfare levels.
Brazil’s largest industrial gas firm used poverty data to help administer social responsibility in Brazil’s poor areas (1, 2). This project, undertaken in partnership with the Ministry of Health and Welfare, will invest approximately US$1.17 million in grants given to youngsters (aged 15 – 17) to act as community human rights and health agents. It is anticipated to provide increased safety and access to health services in poor areas in Brazil.
