Workshop on the Impacts of Poverty Maps:
Past Experiences and New Applications, Brussels Workshop, May 21st, 2003

Application Impacts How the impacts can be enhanced
In Cambodia poor communes in flood and drought prone areas are being mapped to assist emergency food relief services (11, 12). This will contribute to increased food security, particularly in times of drought or stress. Research and training is needed to support further application of poverty maps to natural disaster planning.
The Ministry of Interior Risk and Disaster Management unit of Madagascar are locating hotspots for risk and disaster management in Madagascar (1). This will influence the allocation of US$3.5 million and targeting of risk and management, urban water and sanitation, natural resources, and other projects. Madagascar’s poverty map will ultimately be combined with maps on the extent and frequency of cyclones, floods, droughts, etc. and vulnerability to natural disasters (e.g., malnutrition).
