Workshop on the Impacts of Poverty Maps:
Past Experiences and New Applications, Brussels Workshop, May 21st, 2003

Application Impacts How the impacts can be enhanced
The World Bank is using Guatemala’s poverty map in conjunction with other data to help develop a road strategy (1). Poverty mapping influenced the allocation of US$100 million that will be used to improve roads in especially those departments shown to have low accessibility to basic services.Data comparisons on poverty and infrastructure indicated that travel time is significantly higher in poorer areas. There is a need to build a broad cadre of environmental analysts in Guatemala to facilitate poverty map use in other spatial and comparative analyses.
